What does "sustainability" really mean?
In my view, sustainability is doing the least harm to environmental and human health by pursuing economically viable and technically feasible solutions. I will also refer to the classic definition of sustainable development from the Bruntland Report: "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
Sustainability work is not simple. This discipline requires a successful mastery of complex systems thinking. Professionals must possess an understanding of how various elements interact with each of the following environments: natural, built, economic, social, political, and regulatory. This discipline is in a state of constant flux and requires highly adaptable strategies that consider nascent trends, emerging technologies, pending legislation, and market forces.
